Portus Data Centers expands data center in Kirchheim

  • Groundbreaking ceremony with Bavaria’s Minister of Economic Affairs, Hubert Aiwanger
  • 5.5 MW expansion makes Kirchheim a high-performance data center location
  • Investment strengthens regional and national digital infrastructure

Munich, September 15, 2025 – Last Friday Portus Data Centers officially kicked off the extensive expansion of its data center in Kirchheim near Munich – Portus Data Centers Munich 2 (MUC2) – with a groundbreaking ceremony. At the event, Bavaria’s Minister of Economic Affairs, Regional Development and Energy, Hubert Aiwanger, emphasized the importance of high-performance digital infrastructure for the competitiveness of the Free State and businesses in the region.

Together with general contractor Mercury, one of Europe’s leading specialists in data center construction, Portus Data Centers is building approximately 2,200 square meters of additional capacity. The expansion includes 5.5 megawatts of new IT capacity, increasing the site’s total capacity to 7 megawatts. This will make the Kirchheim data center one of the most powerful locations in the Munich area.

Short distances and low latency are crucial for the digitalization.

Regional data centers process data close to the user, enabling efficient and low-latency data processing. This is crucial for performance-intensive applications, real-time data and hybrid cloud environments. Portus Data Centers also provides capacity for high-performance computing (HPC) and AI workloads to support demanding digital projects. The initial additional capacity at the Kirchheim data center will be available from the beginning of 2027.

“This expansion not only strengthens the region’s digital infrastructure but also the competitiveness of local and international companies in the region,” said Marco Kain, Managing Director of Portus Data Centers Munich. “Proximity to our customers is a key success factor for us. Our short distances and fast response times form the basis for future-proof digital solutions.”

Investing in the digital future of the Munich region

The multi-million-euro expansion, supported by infrastructure investor Arcus, creates locally available IT capacity and strengthens Germany’s digital sovereignty.

“In Kirchheim, we are creating a state-of-the-art platform for companies of all sizes – regionally anchored but with international connections,” said Falk Weinreich, Group CEO of Portus Data Centers. “The project is an important milestone in our buy-and-build growth strategy. Our goal is to provide companies in the Munich region and beyond with high-performance, sustainable, low-latency IT infrastructure, therefore contributing to Germany’s digital capability.”

Commented Gerry O’Donnell, Hyperscale Business Unit Managing Director, Mercury: “We’re delighted to be partnering with Portus Data Centers on the expansion of its Munich campus with the build of MUC2, marked today by the groundbreaking event. As Europe’s leading data center provider, Mercury is proud to be the partner of choice for Portus Data Centers on complex Projects. Having successfully delivered projects in the German market for over 15 years we have developed strong relationships with the local supply chain partners and remain committed to creating sustainable local employment in the regions in which we operate. Combining Portus Data Center’s vision with our proven expertise is a winning formula – together, we’re creating a resilient, energy-efficient, future-ready facility that will power the next generation of digital infrastructure.” As part of the groundbreaking ceremony, Bavaria’s State Minister for Economic Affairs, Regional Development and Energy, Hubert Aiwanger, also emphasized the importance of the project for the State of Bavaria: The investment by Portus Data Centers München GmbH is a strong signal for strengthening Bavaria as a digital hub, for our digital resilience, and for European data sovereignty.”

In parallel with the expansion of MUC2, Portus Data Centers is developing a new facility with up to 12.8 MW of IT capacity on a new site within its highly connected campus in Hamburg. The company has also significantly expanded its Luxembourg data center with an additional 1.2 MW of IT capacity. Further projects in Germany and neighboring markets are already in the pipeline.

Sustainable data center infrastructure with the highest energy efficiency

The expanded data center will be powered entirely by renewable energy and meets the requirements of the Energy Efficiency Act (EnEfG). With a PUE of 1.2 or lower and state-of-the-art cooling technology, Portus Data Centers sets new standards for energy-efficient infrastructure.
